Every year when I meet my students for the first time, I spell my phone number in French… Huh! Complete beginners don’t understand any of the French numbers. Step 2 : Tens and Thousands
If you manage to learn these French numbers, you’ll be able to count until….
… 999 millions!
1 Million (1.000.000)
Wondering how to say 33 or all other numbers in French? It’s basically the same process…
33 = trente-trois
5555 = cinq mille cinq cent cinquante-cinq
From 60 you add numbers up to 20
60+12 = soixante-douze
80+15 = quatre-vingt-quinze
… And so on…
Step 3 : Remember the Numbers’ rule
Use the conjunction et with the numbers following the tens from 21 to 71:
Vingt et un (21)
Trente et un (31)
Quarante et un (41)
Cinquante et un (51)
Soixante et un (61)
Soixante et onze (71)
I hope you’re doing well now with French numbers!
Step 4 : Write French Numbers like a Native!
Mille is never plural
→ 2000 = deux mille
When vingt and cent are multiplied they become plural but they are singular when followed by another number.
→ 200 = deux cents but → 202 = deux cent deux
→ 80 = quatre-vingts but → 83 = quatre-vingt-trois
…So you see! French numbers are actually very easy to learn!
Listen to numbers in French again and again, and you’ll get it!
